What is transcription?
• Transcription is the process of turning speech that is either live or recorded into written text. This process usually begins with an audio or video recording that is subsequently replayed, with the speech either digitally converted, or manually typed, into an electronic document known as a transcript.
Why use a transcription service?
• Important information conveyed verbally during meetings, phone calls, interviews, lectures, seminars, presentations or focus groups can easily be overlooked or forgotten, leading to missed opportunities or errors. This is where transcription comes into its own, creating a more permanent (usually verbatim) written account of all information conveyed through speech.
• The conversion of speech into text creates a handy, more readily accessible resource that can be viewed in almost any environment by a broader audience, including those with impaired hearing.
• Transcripts allow for easy dissemination and faster processing of information. This is especially true for speed readers who are able to skim through a document to find paragraphs of relevance.
Looking across the breadth of our clients at TTP, it’s clear that they originate from a broad range of industries including academic, legal, medical, financial and governmental bodies. Clients from these industries have a variety of reasons for having their audio transcribed, with many of these engaged in interviewing customers or third party organisations. By having such interviews transcribed, our clients obtain a digital copy of the transcript that allows them to incorporate accurate quotes within their articles and other document outputs. They are also able to record valid data to assist with service provision and accountability.
The value and uses of transcription are virtually endless, extending across research and academia to all levels of the service industry, and to sectors as varied as the media, business and medicine. Transcription is of value anywhere that a written record of speech is of use.
