Whenever you record meetings, lectures, interviews or any other audio material, you will inadvertently include other sounds from the local environment. Background noise such as that produced by extraneous voices, boiling kettles or traffic sounds, can be one of the most distracting aspects of any audio recording. At its worst, such interference can render your recording completely incomprehensible. Even if it is usable, a transcriptionist may need to replay the recording multiple times to decipher relevant speech.
This is where WavePad audio editing software, a full-featured professional audio and music editor for Windows and Mac, comes into play. WavePad audio editor allows you to clean up unwanted background noise from your recordings. The process is quite simple, as demonstrated by the steps below:
1. From the Effects tab, click the Cleanup button and select Noise Reduction, Audio Spectral Subtraction. Click the preset drop-menu and select voice or music, then click OK to apply.
2. From the Effects tab, again click the Cleanup button and select Noise Reduction, Multi-band noise gating. Select a preset, then click OK to apply.
3. If using the presets don’t give you the best results, try using lower levels on each type of reduction.
At TTP we understand that it is often impossible to have total control of the environmental conditions in which you record audio. A little time invested in post-processing with tools such as WavePad can make a significant improvement, and make the subsequent transcription of that audio more efficient, resulting in a higher quality document.
